Saturday Morning Cartoons

When I was growing up in the 60s and early 70s, there was nothing like Saturday mornings. Cartoons from early in the morning until about 1 o'clock when I think American Bandstand came on.

I remember watching that a few times, but the cartoons were my favorite. Couldn't get out of bed that early for school, but Saturday morning we were all sitting in front of the TV for hours, no matter how beautiful it was outside. On black and white TV too, we didn't get our first color TV until about 1971 or 1972 and that was a BIG deal! Color TV! I remember sitting so close to it, with or without my glasses and constantly being told it would ruin my eyes. Can you imagine what these video games are doing to kids' eyes today!!!

But Saturday mornings was kid time. I'm sure we were all told a million times to go out and play, but none of us did, not Saturday mornings.

So if you're somewhere in my age range (I'm 52) I hope the following cartoons make you feel like you're back there again in the 60's and 70s watching Saturday morning cartoons. I found a bunch on YouTube. Maybe you should make yourself a bowl of Frosted Flakes, Apple Jacks, Cap'n Crunch, Sugar Crips, Rice Krispies, Cocoa Puffs, Trix, Lucky Charms, Wheaties, Cheerios, Sugar Pops, remind me if I've missed your favorite, and if you don't have it (which I don't, well I do still have Cheerios, which were my least favorite as a kid and my most favorite now) just remember what cereal was your favorite during those times.

Here are some of my favorites that I could find:
Woody Woodpecker...I loved his laugh!

Huckleberry Hound

The Jetsons (see what we thought of the future!!!!)

The Perils of Penelope Pitstop (and Paul Lynde was the voice for the evil villain!)

Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse (remember the frog villain who sound like Edward G. Robinson!)

Peter Potamus (which also included Sheriff Bing Bing Bing Ricochet Rabbit with Deputy Droopalong; Yippie Yappie and Yaaaaa!!! Hooey!)

Rocky and Bullwinkle (with Boris and Natasha!!!)

Mr. Magoo

Top Cat

Snuffy Smith & Barney Google (this one I didn't remember by the name but once I heard the song I remembered!)

Krazy Kat

Felix the Cat

I went back in time watching all these little intros. Remembering those special Saturday mornings for so many years. I didn't forget Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny and all the characters that came along with that, Go Go Gophers, Tennessee Tuxedo, Chilly Willy, The Flintstones, there were just so many, these were just a few of my favorites. I saw Penelope Pitstop was on one morning when I was watching Bella, she thought it was BORING, it's just not as modern as the cartoons she watches now, and she has tons of choices of other things to watch, we just had a few choices, 3 channels I guess for the cartoons? CBS, ABC and NBC. I'm don't think the other channels played cartoons then.

And to top off the weekend, the Sunday morning paper's comics. I haven't read them in years, but during my cartoon days (and quite a few years after my cartoon days) I still looked forward to reading the Sunday comics.

Have a great Saturday! Hope you feel like you're 10!

At the end of the school year last year I showed my students Bewitched! They had never heard of it, and I had to explain the whole premise, but they liked it. The good thing about showing old shows to your kids is they are wholesome, you won't have any explaining to do, I miss those simplier times!
